Our Story

At Copper Penny Grill, we're more than just a restaurant—we're a family with a dream that turned into a growing legacy.
Founded by Paul and Shelly Gref, our journey began behind the bar and on the line—he was the cook, she was the bartender, both with a passion for great food, good company, and a dream of building something of our own. After years with Outback Steakhouse and the Ale House, we moved from Orlando to the small-town charm of North Carolina to raise our twin sons, Hunter and Joshua, in the rural community of Rutherfordton, rooted in values we cherish.
In 2015, the first Copper Penny Grill opened its doors, and we haven't looked back. Today, with three locations across North Carolina—and Hunter and Joshua now part of the family business—we're proud to serve handcrafted American fare made from our own original recipes, cold drinks from our lively bars, and an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome, whether it's a casual night out or a special celebration.
